Malacca Chicken Rice Ball - 馬六甲雞飯粒

Chicken rice ball, a thing that MUST eat in Malacca. There are 3 famous chicken rice shop in Jonker Street, Malacca which is Famosa chicken rice ball, Hoe Kee and Chung Wah coffee shop. My Malacca friend and those visited Malacca adviced me not to visit Famosa chicken rice ball as the taste to them is just so-so. Therefore, I tried Hoe Kee and Chung Wah chicken rice. For my opinion, Chung Wah is the best chicken rice ball in Malacca.

Let me introduce Hor Kee chicken rice first. This shop is just same row with "san shu gong" (三叔公) souvenir shop, open at 9.30am. Advisable to be there around 9.15am without queuing. My experienced told me that every shop in Jonker street will need to queue unless the taste is really awful.

The rice is order by quantity, and RM0.20 for each. Hearsay chicken rice ball cooked by using chicken soup and butter. The chicken looks nice and soft somemore. I remember one of the Taiwan food programme - 美食大三通 taught us put the soy sauce on rice ball and eat, this will be more delicious. Besides chicken rice, you can also get curry fish from this shop.

Operation Hour: 9.30am - 5.30pm (might close early if sold out)

Now, let's look at Chung Wah chicken rice ball. I was cheated by some of the foodblogs which visit the shop at 7.30am in the morning but the shop is actually operate from 8.30am until 3-4pm. This is the longest queue chicken rice shop i had seen in Malacca. My advise to you is to reach Chung Wah before 9am. To prevent crowded in their shop and let customer have a better environment to have their meal, they usually use plastic chair or close the door to prevent extra people come in when table full. How warm is it...(Luckily I'm not the one holding umbrella queuing under hot sun). Chung Wah does not have soy sauce, they only have their sour chili sauce (yummy~). They come with 5 rice balls per plate, if you need extra rice ball, you will need to order by plate.

1. Hoe Kee has a better dine-in environment.
2. Hoe Kee has soy sauce.
3. Hoe Kee chicken looks nicer.
4. Hoe Kee chicken rice ball slightly bigger than Chung Wah.
5. Chung Wah's chicken rice ball taste better than Hoe Kee.
6. Chung Wah's chicken rice ball softer than Hoe Kee.
